I'm on my way up to Edinburgh this morning to see the first preview of MY ROMANTIC HISTORY at the Traverse. Looking forward to catching up with the cast and with director Lyndsey Turner. We're co-producing the play with Sheffield Theatres, and with Birmingham Rep. It's terrific to be working with Daniel Evans and the team at Sheffield, the theatre there is going from strength-to-strength under his new Artistic Directorship, and the brilliant Lyndsey Turner is his associate director there.
There was a public dress rehearsal of the show in Sheffield last week, it teched it at the Traverse on Sunday and have now been rehearsing out of the building for the past few days. It's a slightly odd rehearsal process, which has taken them from Shepherds Bush rehearsal rooms, to the Sheffield Crucible Studio, onto the Traverse for their technical rehearsal, back to a rehearsal room in Leith and back to the Traverse for the first preview tonight. Everyone seems in good spirits, and writer Daniel Jackson has written a brilliantly funny and moving play that I can't wait to see tonight. There's a good interview with Daniel in The List.
So, it's off up to the Festival for me. I much prefer going up at the beginning, as it's a good opportunity to see a lot of plays before the chaos descends. I'm also going to be able to slot in a few auditions for MEN SHOULD WEEP, the Scottish play I'm directing at the National Theatre (the one based in London) this Autumn.
I'll keep you all updated on my Edinburgh adventures via this blog and the Bush twitter feed.
