The last performance of Sixty-Six Books

31st October, 2011 by Josie Rourke | 3 comments

At 7pm on Saturday evening, after the final 24 Hour performance of Sixty-Six Books the company and the audience poured out onto the Uxbridge Road to pose for this photograph. It's a 'recreation' in the loosest possible sense of a picture taken at the opening of the library building in 1896. Here, 115 years later, this beautiful building, gifted by Passmore Edwards to the people of Shepherds Bush, is beginning a new life as the Bush Theatre.

It was a great moment, involving special lights, and photographer Mark Douet standing on the other side of the street on a step-ladder to take the image. The fun of recreating that moment, combined with the elation of those audience members who had just completed a day and a night of performance made for a happy and heady atmosphere.

Some weeks after the event - 66 plays in 24 hours - I can't stop talking about it! My poor (but tolerant) friends must be bored stiff with me. I am enjoying reading the plays from the book we were given and recalling the wonderful performances. I don't suppose your produced a DVD of the performances? Thank you again to all those involved in this magnificent project. Sue

I feel so proud for being on that picture. As if the writing&acting of all 66 books responses weren't awesome enough, the whole experience at the Bush theatre made up for missing sleep for several days and flying in from Germany. Well done, everyone. I'm glad I got to be there!
