More about our assisted performances
-
Captioned performances are available for all of our productions.
Captioning may be useful for people who are deaf or hard of hearing, or who speak English as a second language.
At a captioned performance, a captioning screen displays the actors’ words as they are spoken or sung, and provides information such as sound effects and music.
When booking, please choose a seat in the appropriate area of the auditorium to ensure you have a good view of the captioning screen.

Audio Description provides information about the visual elements of a production.
The description is delivered live, in-between dialogue and picked up through headsets, giving access to blind and visually impaired audiences.
Audio Description headsets can be requested when you’re booking your tickets, and collected from Box Office when you arrive. Touch Tours are available 1 hour before all Audio Described performances.
Audio Introductory Notes describe the set and provide any other information you might need about the production before the performance starts. These will be available as a text document and an audio file in advance of the performance. You can find them on our website here. The Introductory Notes are always delivered live before the performance begins via your headset.

Relaxed performances aim to create a space for everyone, especially those who would benefit from a more informal experience or have sensory sensitivities.
Relaxed Performances are sometimes called Sensory Adapted Performances. Babes in arms are welcome.
At Relaxed Performances you can expect:
- A relaxed attitude to noise in the auditorium; you are welcome to respond to the show in whatever way feels natural.
- An open door policy: you can freely enter and exit the auditorium when needed.
- ights in the audience area will remain on at a low level throughout the performance.
- We will soften any loud noises, and remove any flashing or strobe lights.
- A quieter chill-out space available before, during and after the performance, should you need some time away.
Audience members are encouraged to bring fidget toys, headphones and other items that may help them enjoy their visit. There will be ear defenders available to use, which you can borrow from our Box Office.

Chilled performances aim to create an inclusive space for everyone, especially those who would benefit from a more informal experience.
Chilled performances are ideal for people who feel more at ease knowing they can go in and out of the auditorium during the show, including people with dementia. Babes in arms are welcome.

We aim to provide our audiences with the most complete information about our shows, to ensure you have the best experience when you visit the Bush Theatre.
We put together written documents called Self-Care Guides. These are provided as PDFs and contain detailed information about our shows, so that you can find out more about what to expect. This includes content guidance and technical information including strobe lighting and other effects.
You can access these guides by clicking on the link on the event page for each production – click the link that says ‘Self-Care Guide and Content Warnings’.
