BushGreen Loves: Black Plays Archive

Ever wanted to explore the Black British canon of playwriting?

Well, you can. There’s an online catalogue of the first professional production of every African, Caribbean, and Black British play produced in the U.K. Not only that, there’s also interviews and essays on Black British Theatre and a selection of play extracts, recorded especially for the Archive.

It’s an incredible resource – we urge you to explore it, use it and read the plays, many of which are in our library. It was made possible by support from Sustained Theatre and Arts Council England. Good on them.

The archive was curated by Goldsmiths alumna Natasha Bonnelame: “It’s important that emerging playwrights, directors and theatre practitioners are aware of this history, as cultural memory can only survive if it is reproduced and academia must play a part in ensuring this happens.”
