Reciprocity – Photography by Refugees and Asylum Seekers

Giving and Receiving through the Lens of Refugees and Asylum Seekers Across the UK
Commissioned by The Socially Engaged Art Salon
Free exhibition

A free exhibition from The Social Engaged Art Salon – Reciprocity: Giving and Receiving through the Lens of Refugees and Asylum Seekers Across the UK.

In this project a group of refugees and asylum seekers have come together to challenge stereotypes about people seeking safety. The seven participants have used disposable cameras to take photos on the theme of ‘Giving and Receiving’. The photos, displayed throughout the Bush Theatre’s front of house spaces, reveal different ideas related to the theme including everyday reciprocal exchanges with friends, the public, nature and animals.

The exhibition is free, and is on display to accompany the Bush’s current main house production, Waleed Akhtar’s The P Word, which tells the story of a gay Pakistani man who seeks asylum in the UK following homophobic persecution.

Project commissioned by The Socially Engaged Art Salon and curated by Dr Gil Mualem-Doron, IMIX and Jemima Compton, a Master’s student from the University of Sussex. seasbrighton.org
