Relaxed Performances

Relaxed performance icon showing the letters R P in a square.Relaxed performances aim to create a space for everyone, especially those who would benefit from a more informal experience.

We programme a range of Relaxed, Sensory Adapted and Chilled Performances throughout the year in both our Studio and Holloway Theatre spaces.

At these performances, audience members are encouraged to bring fidget toys, headphones and other items that may help them enjoy their visit. There will be ear defenders available to use, which you can borrow from our Box Office.

What to expect

Relaxed Performances
Relaxed Performances (sometimes known as Sensory Adapted performances) are for everyone, especially audience members who have sensory sensitivities or would benefit from a more informal experience. At our Relaxed Performances, you can expect:

  • A relaxed attitude to noise in the auditorium; you are welcome to respond to the show in whatever way feels natural.
  • To be able to freely enter and exit the auditorium when needed.
  • Lights in the audience area will remain on at a low level throughout the performance.
  • We will soften any loud noises, and remove any flashing or strobe lights.
  • A quieter chill-out space available before, during and after the performance.

Chilled Performances
At our Chilled Performances, you can expect:

  • A relaxed attitude to noise in the auditorium; you are welcome to respond to the show in whatever way feels natural.
  • To be able to freely enter and exit the auditorium when needed.
  • A quieter chill-out space available before, during and after the performance.

We do not make any alterations to the sound, light or other theatrical effects of the production at these performances.

Chilled performances are ideal for people who feel more at ease knowing they can go in and out of the auditorium during the show including people with dementia. These performances are for everybody and babes in arms are welcome.

We offer familiarisation visits for patrons who benefit from seeing the theatre before the day of the performance. If you would find another familiarisation tool helpful, or to book a familiarisation visit, please email us at [email protected].
